Typical car insurance policies don’t offer coverage for damage caused by floods.
However, living in Florida, you’ll likely see many companies offering exactly that, especially around the monsoon season. But even with this, there’s a caveat.
Flood insurance is generally offered for homes, not vehicles. And therein lies the issue.
Since we enjoy the subtropical climate a lot more than your average American, we’re even in more need of coverage for flood damage, especially for our vehicles.
Living in a Flood Zone – What to Do
Now, this isn’t to say that no Florida auto insurance companies offer coverage for flood damage. Manatee Insurance is one such company that does all it can to protect your car and home. However, even with our policies, coverage for damage depends on the type of policy you acquire.
What about Comprehensive Coverage?
Comprehensive coverage covers for damages that may have occurred from an incident other than an accident. If you bump into another vehicle, that damage will fall in collision coverage. Anything otherwise will be covered by the former option.
With both types of coverage, many drivers are required to carry both, especially if they’re leasing the vehicle. If they aren’t able to pay, the lender can repossess the vehicle. If you want the car to be in perfect condition, if such a situation occurs, it’s best to have both options.
So I Can Claim this Coverage at Any Time?
Actually, there is a proviso to this claim. If you’re in a zone where you are in the hurricane’s path, you can claim it. However, you can’t pay for the coverage only a few days before the hurricane is predicted to make landfall. Otherwise this will count as fraud.
Claiming Auto Flood Damage
If you fear that your vehicle may get damaged because of flooding, here’s what you need to know beforehand:
– Make the claim immediately. Call in as soon as possible, and be first in line to get that claim possessed.
– Dry out your vehicle. The sooner you do this, the better. But don’t do this on your own. Contact a professional who knows how to dry out flood-damaged vehicles.
– Call the body shop that was recommended by your insurance carrier.
