Flood Safety 101: What To Do Before, During And After A Flood

Matthew Smith

Floods are a common occurrence in the United States. Every year, flooding causes considerable amounts of damages to commercial, industrial and residential properties, personal possessions, and infrastructure in various parts of the country.

If you’re living in a moderate or high flood zone, it’s imperative that you get flood insurance.

Insurance can protect your home against the damages associated with flooding. Many people share a misconception that home insurance policies offer coverage for floods. This isn’t true.

Flood insurance is a separate policy that covers damages to your home. Homeowners can purchase flood insurance from a private insurance company or through the federal government’s National Flood Insurance Program.

The National Flood Insurance Program provides limited coverage for residential properties (up to $250,000) and some items. If you’re looking for additional coverage, you need to approach a private insurance company.

Keep in mind, private companies sell flood insurance via the National Flood Insurance Program. In addition, an insurance company considers a number of factors for determining the insurance premium. These factors include the location of a home (low, moderate or high flood zone); items that need coverage; amount of insurance a homeowner wants to purchase and more.

If you’re living in an area that is subject to flooding and heavy rains, you may want to look into flood insurance.

Coupled with flood insurance, it’s also important to take some steps to protect your home and your family.

Before a flood

·         Monitor your surroundings

·         Keep yourself updated with the latest weather forecast

·         Prepare emergency bags containing essential supplies, such as drinking water, cash, medication, toiletries, flashlights, documents (insurance papers, bank account numbers, etc.)

·         Fill your car’s gas tank

·         Disconnect all electrical appliances

·         Be ready to evacuate to a safer place

During a flood

·         Avoid disaster areas

·         Do not drive on flooded roads

·         If your car breaks down, abandon it

·         Stay away from electrical poles

·         Leave the car vehicle immediately if water rises around it

After a flood

·         Do not return to your home until it’s safe

·         Monitor weather updates

·         Take pictures of the damage to file an insurance claim
