The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has documented cases of car crashes in Florida. It reveals that there was a total of 402,385 vehicle crashes in the state in 2017with a 1.67 percent increase from 2016. The fatalities that resulted from these cases aggregated to 3116.
If we take the percent increase as an average annual rate of increment from 2017 to 2019, the numbers are expected to have risen substantially. With approximately 1098 car accidents occurring every day, the issue begs notice.
Here are some of the worst car accidents Florida has experienced.
8 Car Pileup in Miami
On January 14 in 2018, traffic had come to a standstill because of an accident involving eight vehicles in Southwest Miami-Dade that injured six people with one critically.
While only passenger vehicles were involved in the accident, the cause of the accident is still unknown. The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reached the accident site promptly and extracted living victims from the pile of debris that the 8 cars had become.
16 Car Pileup on I-17
This car accident happened in 2012 on January 29. Occurring at Interstate 17 near Gainesville, the accident took place during early hours of the day.
The wildfires at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park had released heavy smoke that was further blocking vision.
Because of this, 10 cars and 6 large tractor-trailers collided into each other, leaving the metal bodies crumpled and completely destroyed. It was also on this day that 10 people lost their lives and 18 suffered on hospital beds.
22 Car Pileup On I-95
It was on September 5, 2017, that a catastrophic accident occurred north of Jacksonville, in Nassau County, on Interstate-95. Florida Highway Patrol had to seal the routes to deal with the crash of 2 cars earlier in the night. A tractor-trailer lost control of its brakes and collided into a stationary car and that had a domino effect over 21 other cars.
This was a rare case of a car accident where 21 vehicles suffered while being standstill. The accident resulted in 1 fatality and 13 casualties that were rushed to a nearby hospital. The southbound lanes of I-95 remained sealed in the wake of the crashes.
Road safety is immensely important and for that, you need to maximize the protection of your cars.
