Matthew Smith

Drunk driving is a big problem in the United States. Every day, about 29 people die as a result of vehicle crashes that involve a drunk driver resulting in annual motor vehicle damages costing around $44 billion.

Many people underestimate the dangers of drunk driving simply because they’ve managed to reach home safely after a couple of drinks. Such an puts the lives of both the drunk driver and people on the street at risk.

In this blog, we go over the dangers of drunk driving.

Driving Under the Influence is a Crime (DUI)

Driving Under the Influence (DUI), also referred to as Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), impaired driving or drunk driving is a crime and is described by physicians as driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In order to measure the level of intoxication, police officers usually conduct a blood alcohol content (BAC) measurement. BAC measurements in excess of a defined level such as 0.08% or 0.05% are considered criminal offenses that don’t require the need to prove impairment. In certain jurisdictions, the level is as high as 0.12%.

All 50 states have laws in place targeting drunk drivers. Nearly one-third of all states follow the policy that forbids the presence of any drug or prohibited substance in the driver’s body while controlling a vehicle. Other states have established specific limits whereas some have adopted a policy of zero-tolerance.

Aside from the health dangers related to drunk driving, it has other severe consequences that affect your life negatively. Being convicted of DUI may result in loss of employment, high insurance rates, financial setbacks, public embarrassment, and the possibility of incarceration.

Dangers of DUI

Even small amounts of alcohol in your bloodstream can impact driving ability. The effects of alcohol vary greatly and affect people in the following ways:

-Reduces Concentration: Driving requires you to focus on multiple things such as traffic lights, your speed, and staying in your lane. This is drastically reduced when drinking.

-Decreases Vision: Alcohol consumption leads to blurred vision and the inability to control eye movement. It also hampers your ability to judge the distance between your car and other objects. Moreover, it reduces the range of your peripheral vision.

-Slows Reaction Times: Drinking slows your reaction time and greatly increasing the chances of an accident.

-Brings about a Lack of Coordination: Increased levels of consumption can affect your motor skills.
